Všechno začalo v roce 2015 kdy Jáchym Solecký, tehdy student sexty, stejně jako mnoho dalších PORGánů před ním vycestoval do USA. Studoval na partnerské škole Breck, kde ho zaujal klub robotiky. V Americe je robotika uznávaná a obvyklá aktivita pro ambiciózní studenty. Bylo hned jasné, že to je činnost jako dělaná pro PORG, kde je mnoho aktivních a motivovaných studentů se zájmem o programování a inženýrství. S podporou tehdejšího učitele fyziky Jakuba Haláčka se začala realizovat tvorba týmu. V Evropě jich je aktuálně pouze sedm včetně nás, v roce 2015 byly jenom tři. Naše škola navíc ani neměla prostory, ve kterých by se dal robot postavit. Nejprve tým pracoval ve fyzikální laboratoři, později dostal vlastní prostory v bývalé výtvarně. Jako jméno bylo zvoleno R. U. R. dle hry, kde se slovo "robot" poprvé objevilo.

Naše první soutěž byla velmi úspěšná, robot byl velmi jednoduchý a neprofesionální (kolečka od kočárku apod.), ale na přejíždění překážek a bránění ostatních robotů byl ideální. To týmu zajistilo nejen titul pro nejlepšího nováčka, ale i tzv. "Wild Card" (divokou kartu), která povolila týmu postoupit do celosvětového finále v St. Louis. Tento výsledek zůstává dodnes naším nejlepším.

Další zajímavá soutěž byla v roce 2019. Robot byl již sofistikovanější, ale s tím přišly vlastní komplikace. Přibyly systémy na střelbu i základní automatizace. Náš výtvor byl konečně pořádným účastníkem soutěže a poprvé jsme to mohli myslet opravdu vážně. Tou dobou už na robotovi pracoval dvacetičlenný tým. Poprvé začalo brát úspěch robota do svých rukou oddělení programátorů, které se mohlo do tohoto ročníku realizovat pouze na triviálních úkolech. V Americe však různé mechanismy z nejrůznějších důvodů přestaly fungovat a náš robot sloužil opět pouze pro pohyb po hrací ploše a defenzívu.

Ani toto už si ale aktuální členové týmu nepamatují. V roce 2020 přišla pandemie koronaviru, která nám ve jako občanům EU zabránila v účasti na soutěži, a o rok později ani nebyla vyhlášena. Všichni nadšení robotici z předchozích let již odmaturovali a soutěže se tedy nemohli zúčastnit. Dokonce ani učitel fyziky, který celou aktivitu vedl, už na škole není. Pro robotiku na PORGu to téměř znamenalo konec. Nezbyl jediný účastník ani mentor.

Vystaveni této nepřijatelné situaci pro tak populární a úspěšnou aktivitu se rozhodli dva bývalí studenti PORGu a nadšenci pro robotický kroužek, vdechnout týmu R.U.R. nový život. S robotem uspořádali náborovou akci pro studenty tehdejší kvarty a kvinty, ukázali jim, co robot umí a jaké jsou jejich ambice. Nábor byl úspěšný, přihlásili se mechanici i programátoři z řad studentů a vytvořili úplně nový tým.

It all began in 2015, when one of our sexta's students, like many before him, travelled to USA and whilst studying on Breck school, MN, took an interest in the robotics club. In America, robotics is highly regarded as an activity for ambitious students. It was instantly clear that it is an extracurricular as fit for PORG as it gets, as we have plenty of active and motivated students with interests in programming and engineering. One word led to another and with the support of our physics teacher, the first plans for the next European team were made. We are still only one of a few, currently we are of seven, back then only the three teams. At first our school wasn't able to provide any spaces, so we started with robotics in the physics lab. Later we were able to move to the former arts classroom.

As for the name, we couldn't choose anything else then R. U. R., name of the play where the word “robot” first originated from, to signify that robots are nothing foreign to us. 

Our first competition was very successful. Our robot was extremely simple and unprofessional (with baby carriage wheels and such), but it was ideal for riding over obstacles and defending from other robots. That secured us the awards of Highest Rookie Seed, Rookie Inspiration Award sponsored by National Instruments, but also the Wildcard, that allowed us to compete in Worlds Hopper Division in St. Louis, where we won the Championship Division Highest Rookie Seed. That remains our best result to date. 

Another interesting competition was in 2019. Robot was now more sophisticated, but that brought its own complications. There were more systems for shooting and basic automatization. Our creation was, for the first time, a proper contender and we could finally take it truly seriously. We now had 20 working on the robot, and the programmers really started to take part in ensuring the robots success, unlike before, when they could only solve trivial issues. But as luck would have it, the robot got to the USA and there all the new mechanisms stopped working. We were once again only good for basic movement across the field and defense. 

But our current members don't remember either of those years. With 2020's start of the pandemic, we couldn't compete because of restrictions for entry to USA, and next year's competition was not even announced. All the members graduated and even our physics teacher, that led the entire thing, isn't a part of the school anymore. It almost meant the complete end of robotics on PORG. There wasn't a single student nor mentor. 

Faced with the complete doom of such a popular and successful activity, two former PORG students and robotics club enthusiasts decided to give R. U. R. a new life. They made a new robot and started recruiting in kvarta and kvinta classes. They demonstrated what the robot could do and presented their ambitions. They showed the potential of the robotics club and what could be lost. But it wasn't, thanks to the overwhelming interest. New mechanics, engineers and programmers emerged from the student body and created the basis for a completely new team, with the former students as its mentors.
